SSMART Grants!

Remember how a couple months ago, BITSS announced that we had launched a prize for especially transparent research and teaching? (Read this if you missed it.) Well, today we’re announcing that we’re also looking to fund research on transparency. Of course, you have to do the funded research transparently, meaning that you’ll be doing transparent research on transparency, which I think earns you double bonus points. To make this even more meta, we’re also looking to fund meta-analysis.To be specific, BITSS is launching our 2015 Grants for Social Science Meta-Analysis and Research Transparency (SSMART). Full details and the RFP are here. Briefly, we are looking to fund research in three categories:

  1. New Methodology. Are you developing statistical methodology that investigates publication bias, p-hacking, false positives or reproducibility, and inventing the next p-curve, the next Test for Excess Significance, the next Incredibility Index, or the next pre-analysis plan?
  2. Meta-Analysis. Are you using the tools above to investigate entire bodies of published research? Maybe combining them across disciplines in novel ways, doing extreme bounds or sensitivity analysis, or using the publicly available data from any number (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) of excellent repositories?
  3. Culture of Research Transparency. Are you doing surveys (1,2) or experiments with social science researchers to investigate why some researchers adopt transparent practices, or to determine the effects of adopting such practices in the social sciences (1, 2)?

If you answered yes to any of the above, we should talk. And by talk, I mean you should submit a proposal, because we might like to fund your research. We also strongly encourage you to share the RFP with anyone you know who might be interested. The deadline for applying is 11:59 pm US Pacific Time, Sunday September 6, 2015.
